Coachella Day 2 Recap

Ugh I'm almost dead right now, but last night was amazing. I could watch Arcade Fire every single night for the rest of my life and never get bored.

I was actually pretty true to my sched yesterday:

Regina Spektor - Flawless set. She played all the hits, including "Fidelity," "On The Radio," "Us," "Poor Little Rich Boy," "Samson," and "That Time." At first I thought she was just solo, but she did bring her band out for part of the set. She was such a great artist to see in the daytime in the hot sun.
New Pornographers - They played all the hits too! Nothing from the new album, which was ok by me. They sounded great, playing songs like "Jessica Numbers," "Sing Me Spanish Techno," "Use It," and "Bones of an Idol." Excellent.
Kings of Leon - They sound so f'ing rocking. I'm not as familiar with their song names, but they played equal amounts of Aha Shake Heartbreak and Because of the Times.
Arcade Fire - Oh Arcade Fire. What can I say? They were definitely the highlight of my night last night. Nothing could have compared to them. They closed their set with "Neighborhood #3," then "Rebellion (Lies)" and finally "No Cars Go." So much fun. "My Body Is A Cage" breaks my heart every time they play it.
Girl Talk - He kept flashing the audience with weird messages on the screen. He's really great, but I wasn't in the mood for him at that point. Not after seeing AF.
LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture both had pretty solid sets. Very fun to dance to. Yay.
[Some RHCP in between]
Day 2 = Amazing.

Coachella Day 1 Recap

Day 1 of Coachella is overrrrr! :(

Here's what I caught:

Of Montreal - Sounded great. Pretty much the same set I saw two weeks ago at Indie Rock Karaoke. So left early to catch SSPU.
Silversun Pickups - They're great live! The Brian Aubert is a good frontman and the band was just fun the watch overall.
Arctic Monkeys - Fun set. Saw them from far away, but they sound a lot better live than I thought they would.
Rufus Wainwright - Impeccable voice as always. Loved his outfit. See pictures below!
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Crowd was amazing during their set, which was rockin'. But you could tell that they hadn't been playing a lot (obvs, it was their reunion show). However, it was amazing just to be there.
Interpol - Solid set. Saw this from far away also.
Bjork - AMAZING. No words to describe this. Head to BrooklynVegan for set list, pics, etc...

Finally! Someone Said It!

Do you really like the Arctic Monkeys? Do you like them enough to be able to articulate WHY you actually like their music? Personally, I don't understand the fascination with the Sheffield quartet. I got to the point where I even became self-conscious about my musical tastes... was there something wrong with me? Why am I the only one who does not like the Monkeys?

But finally, somebody said it... publicly! I felt vindicated after reading the Village Voice editorial entitled, "Nickelback U.K." by Garrett Kamps. Basically, the article said that the Arctic Monkeys, specifically their latest album "Favourite Worst Nightmare," are a good band, but they are definitely not the "band of ages" the UK has made them out to be.

It just turns out, that everyone was afraid to talk shit on the band. You'd swear it was 1984 or something! Every time I listen to their music, I'm left feeling like I've been gypped... almost like watching the 2nd season of Lost. The UK has hypped their (dare I say it!) mediocre band so much that you'd think it was the second coming of Jesus!

So everyone.... you can come out hiding now.

P.S. This second record is blah.

Indie Cookbook! Bands Share Their Recipies!

Move over Rachael Ray (and stop smiling for God's sake!)! Over a 100 bands like Voxtrot, Tilly and the Wall, Belle & Sebastian, Ben Kweller, Death Cab for Cutie, Devendra Banhart, The Hold Steady, The Violent Femmes, and Interpol have all contributed their favorite recipes in "I Like Food, Food Tastes Good", a cookbook compiled by brooklyn-based journalist, Kara Zuaro.

It features recipes like Franz Ferdinand's Lemon Ginger Flapjacks, Camera Obscura's Vegetarian Paella, Battles's Roasted Bone Marrow, Patrick Phelan's Swanky Mac N Cheese w/ lobster and white truffles (high roller!), Interpol's Cacao Rosso, and Death Cab for Cuties Veggie Sausage and Peanut Butter Sandwich (hrmm... I think Ben Gibbard forgot to mention that he can't cook for shit).

According to Pitchfork, there will be a happy hour on the 25th at Hi Fi (Galen Polivka from The Hold Steady will be bartending! And they have a rad jukebox!), a release party at Union Pool on May 5, and an in-store performance at "the Brooklyn Barnes & Noble." Like Brooklyn has only ONE B&N... We have TWO, biatch! It's going to be at the Park Slope location on 7th Ave on May 17th... at which Kara will be doing a signing.

Stereogum also covered this in February, but the book hit the shelves today for $14 on Amazon (free super-saver shipping on orders over $25!). Pssst.. Maureen.. I want this for christmas.

Sheryl Crow = Toilet Paper Nazi

Sheryl Crow.. she's known for her radio-friendly tunes, her romance with Lance Armstrong, her nine Grammys, her ridiculously retarded Revlon commercial, and to add to that list, she will be forever known as The Toilet Paper Nazi.

According to Starpulse:
Singer Sheryl Crow wants global restrictions on using toilet paper in an attempt to save the environment. Crow, who is touring American colleges to raise awareness about global warming, as told students to only use "one square per restroom visit."
She says, "I propose a limitation be put on on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting."

Hrm.. I guess you're SOL (I'll be here all night, folks) if you have explosive diarrhea.

Personally, I think America should start using bidets. I wonder if toilet paper companies will start commissioning scare campaigns if such a thing were to happen. What would their slogan be?

UPDATE: Ms. Crow was joking. Botched joke, if you asked me. That's the last time I relied on Starpulse!

Reunion Union

Another Sunday, another NY Times article. This time, music critic Ben Ratliff takes on the subject of this year's reunion-itis, citing reunion tours by The Police, Genesis, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins and Squeeze. He talks about how one problem with these reunions is that they can never capture the true experience of seeing these bands the first time around. The atmosphere, feelings and memories garnered from those experiences cannot be recreated, no matter how hard we try.
Or maybe something about these events feels broadly, even comically, illegitimate. Aren’t we supposed to form a community of taste around living culture, not afterlife culture? Isn’t a great band supposed to be more than just a band, but an embodiment of a particular age, a state of mind, a place? How do you identify, then, with an aging act whose members are well past their original states of mind, have mostly relocated to sunnier places, and whose prime motivation would appear to be making money through entertainment consortiums like AEG Live, which controls Goldenvoice, the concert promoter behind the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival in California, and the pathbreaker in the marketing of recent-past reunions? And aren’t, say, 15 years of inactivity required before a reunion can be considered desirable?
As he goes on to explore the more human aspect of bands, Ratliff also delves into the observation that fans need these reunions to remind them of a more fruitful period in music history.
It seems now that the audience position for rock is coming closer to that of jazz around the mid-1970s. Most of the forefathers are still with us; increasingly, they seem to have something important to teach us. And we are developing strange hungers for music of the not-so-distant past that might be bigger and deeper than the hunger we originally had. That feeling people talked about during the Pixies shows a few years ago — the word “eerie” was used a great deal — seems similar to descriptions of the feeling generated in the Village Vanguard when Dexter Gordon played his comeback shows there in 1976, after living abroad. Since then, jazz has advanced into a culture of incessant re-experience, endless tributes. Actual reunions are barely noticed: a huge percentage of the music refers to great moments of the past. Yet that doesn’t mean that jazz can’t still be fantastic, even transformative. It is, all the time.
I'm not sure how much of this article I agree with, mostly because I am admittedly too young to have seen most of the aforementioned bands at their prime and therefore cannot relate to this nostalgic feeling. But it makes me wonder if, in 15-20 years, I will be feeling the same nostalgia for the bands that I currently love. Ratliff cites this as well, using Arcade Fire as an example. "He is not sure whether new bands — Arcade Fire, say — are striking deeply enough into the soul of the culture to necessitate their own reunions down the road. I think context will determine it."

Do you think that bands that are currently popular will stand the test of time? Maybe not physically, but certainly in our minds. Sure, there will always be bands that we like now but that we'll forget about, just like there's that song that occasionally plays on the radio that you know every word to but you can't for the life of you remember who sings it. But bands like Radiohead or Wilco or yes, Arcade Fire, represent something bigger, don't you think? And I'll be damned if I miss that Arcade Fire reunion in 20 years.

Sigur Ros: In A Frozen Sea

Attention Sigur Ros fans! A new collector's item is coming your way. Jeff Anderson, of Artist in Residence (a+r), put together a+r's first book, In A Frozen Sea: A Year With Sigur Ros. He followed them around during the 2006 Takk, and offers viewpoints from "both the fan in the crowd and the fan backstage," presenting "a unique insight into the artist by way of exclusive interviews and observations."
being the music lovers that they are, the creators of a+r understand the excitement and value surrounding a collector's item – and for sigur ros fans, in a frozen sea: a year with sigur ros is absolutely it. the 32-page publication comes encased in a 12" vinyl jacket, and features photography of both the band and the vast icelandic landscape, setting a beautiful context for the band's music. during sigur ros' gratis tour of iceland, the band found themselves playing everywhere from the nation's capitol of reykjavik to small towns in the icelandic countryside, setting up stages wherever they went (with full brass and string ensemble, of course). the publication's images give sigur ros' songs a visual backdrop like no other – from behind the stage and beyond the crowd, you see vast mountains, glacier tips, coniferous trees reaching skyward, all blending in with the bend of an azure sky. a+r captures all the details, from information about iceland's most famous musical church (and the stunning photo of sigur ros playing in front of it) to the faces of fans enraptured with the band's live show, to a shot capturing singer/guitarist jonsi in a shoe-less moment on stage, curling his socked toes under as he performs. artist appreciation, indeed.
You will be able to order In A Frozen Sea from the a+r website starting June 1st.

There will also be a limited edition vinyl package available, complete with three 12" LPs. Get 'em quick!

Beirut To Release Sophomore Album

Beirut is almost set to release a follow up to the fantastic Balkan inspired album, Gulag Orkestar. The yet-to-be-titled 12-track album is tentatively due in September.

This album will be a departure from Gulag. In the Billboard.com article, Condon said, "The influences are coming from a different place; it's not heavily a Balkan aesthetic. I was listening to a lot of old French songs, but I'm taking it in my direction."

Following the release of Gulag, Condon released two EPs, Lon Gisland and Pompeii. The latter was released on eMusic. Also, his May 6-8 shows in NYC are sold out according to Billboard.

Amazon's Trying To Give Us Indie Cred

I was looking around on Amazon this morning, and saw this:

Aw, thanks, Amazon! How thoughtful of you.

If you can't see that well, it says "Fed up with the same old pop pap? There's only one thing to do. Go indie, with 150 groundbreaking CDs to choose from, just $9.99 each." So I did a little research, and here's what I came up with.
Amazon.com today announced that it has teamed up with more than 30 indie labels, such as Sub Pop and Barsuk, to launch Go Indie, a new section in its music store featuring hand-picked selections of nearly 700 independent titles, 150 of which will carry a reduced price of $9.99. This limited-time offering is aimed to help the labels have prominent space on larger retailers, a problem found prevalent when battling against major label releases.

"In this day and age, it's rare that a retailer carries the full range of our releases, so thank God for Amazon.com," said Andy Kotowicz, vice president of sales and marketing at Sub Pop, via press release. "They are the perfect partner to help us showcase the scope and breadth of Sub Pop's current artists and diverse catalogue." Via CMJ.
I can't decide how I feel about this. It's cool, I guess. Except for the fact that Amazon is now marketing itself as the new, hip retailer for music. Personally, I wouldn't trust Amazon to recommend the new hottness to me, because their What's Hot in Music section always sucks on my homepage. But they did choose cool labels to partner with, including Domino, Rykodisc, Matador, Mute and Yep Roc. And this will definitely help indie artists get in to the mainstream a little more.

They also got some artists for their Music You Should Hear feature:

Mates of State
Ben Lee
Stephen Malkmus

What do you guys think of this new Go Indie Amazon feature?

There's always this sort of "it" animal. You know what I'm talking about, don't lie. Last year, it was penguins. Which obviously started with March of the Penguins, which then led to two animated movies about penguins. This year I'm betting that it's otters. Even The OC got in with the craze last Fall, with Seth's animal spirit being an otter. Don't ask me why I know that.

Cross-Pollination In New York

New York-based label Family Records released their second record yesterday, Cross-Pollination: The Mixtape Vol. 1.

Cross-Pollination is a free weekly concert series that takes place in the Lower East Side at Pianos. On most Tuesday evenings, you can find two artists playing, each doing their own solo set. Then the artists combine and perform a few songs together.

Via CMJ:

"We decided to release the mixtape for free because it's a way for us to give back to the audience who has supported us for the past 3 years, and also to hopefully reach new people looking for great independent music to discover," says Cross-Pollination co-creator Wes Verhoeve, who also is a member of the Undisputed Heavyweights. "We started Cross-Pollination because we felt the local music scene was so fragmented and thought the collaborative aspect of the series was our contribution to fostering more of a community feel. It's great to see how artists we've brought together sometimes end up forming bands, or going on tour together."

Hey Everybody! Of Montreal Did Karaoke Part 2

Let's see. Where did I leave off? Oh yeah, Paul Rudd and David Wain sang "More Than A Feeling." Well, before that wondrous performance, Michael Showalter did INXS's "Need You Tonight." Here's a clip I got of it:

Shortly after that was "Dancing Queen," where a bunch of the previous singers got on stage, Kevin Barnes slid over to the keys and chaos ensued.

And here is the winner for best costume and most outlandish performance of the night: Aqua Man. He sang David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" and he was INTO IT. He even had a trident.

Later, Michael Showalter came back on stage for the last song, "Hot Blooded."
And then the sound guy stole the mic from him. Kind of an anti-climatic finales, but still fun nonetheless.Afterwards, Flosstradamus got right on the 1s and 2s. His set was flowing with the best dance songs we haven't heard in 10 years, including "Motownphilly" by Boyz II Men and "100% Pure Love" by Crystal Waters. Amazing.
